REVIEW: Little Women, Big God

Throughout the Bible, God took people who seemed less than worthy and turned them into leaders. There are many stories about those who didn’t feel qualified due to their pasts or lack of skills who God intentionally chose to serve a bigger purpose. Although Hebrew society was governed by men, God often raised up woman into positions of significance.

In her new bible study, Little Women, Big God, Debbie W. Wilson explores the role that women played in the Bible, specifically five women in the family line of Jesus. The study chronicles the lives of Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary (Jesus’ mother). Each woman came from humble beginnings, and in some cases, living without God at all. This study provides a detailed look at how God protected these women and placed them in position to serve God in powerful ways.

Little Woman, Big God is divided into ten weekly studies. Each week is then divided into five days’ worth of scripture, discussion, and reflection questions. The organizational structure allows readers to use the devotion either as part of a group study or for personal study. In addition to the actual story of each woman’s role, Wilson also provides references to other scripture passages that reinforce similar lessons. While some readers might not directly relate to all of the study questions depending on their personal life experiences, each set of questions guides readers through the early lives of each subject to the impact they had on their families and society. Even if a reader doesn’t directly relate to a specific part of the story, they will relate to the overall message of each woman’s experiences of reliance on God.

If you’re looking for a new Bible study, here are some reasons to check out Little Woman, Big God:

  • Ideal for a small group setting, but also great for individual study
  • Organization of lessons allows for flexibility. Study participants can read one lesson a day, or if needed, they can read the whole section in one setting.
  • Minimal time commitment. Each lesson only takes about 15-30 minutes to read and reflect. This allows readers to incorporate study time into their daily schedule.
  • Written by a woman, about women, for women. There are many wonderful Bible studies that offer participants great insight into God’s power and grace. This study provides women with stories about people just like them. Readers see that the women in Jesus’ family faced the same struggles woman face today – relationships, family dynamics, self-doubt.

On a personal note, I learned a lot while going through this study. Mary and, to some extent, Ruth, are discussed more frequently in larger contexts within sermons at church or other Bible studies. But Tamar, Rahab, and Bathsheba are usually side notes to bigger stories. Being able to study their lives more in-depth provided new insights into women’s roles in God’s plan for his people.

The subheading of this study is “It’s not the size of your problems, but the size of your God.” The lives of each of the five women detailed in Little Woman, Big God demonstrate this perfectly. No matter what our past, our skills, or our experiences, God has a specific plan for us. He provides the means necessary to help us fulfill our purpose in life. God is bigger than our problems and our doubts.
